The Z1 sits at the top of LG’s Signature range. The 88 inch OLED panel carries 7680 x 4320 pixels, and Pixel Dimming switches those pixels off one at a time, which is how the black parts of a picture stay black instead of turning grey.

The screen is held in an open gallery frame with a speaker bar running below it, so the set stands on the floor in front of a wall rather than on a cabinet.

The speaker bar sits under the screen and fires forward into the room, so the 80W system is doing the work a separate soundbar would normally do.

Key Features

  • Detail holds together across 88 inches. 7680 x 4320 works out at more than 33 million pixels, so you can sit close to a screen this wide without the picture breaking up.
  • Night scenes stay black, not grey. Perfect Black and Pixel Dimming handle the dark areas, while Ultra Luminance Pro lifts the bright parts of the same frame.
  • Normal TV and 4K film get rebuilt closer to 8K. The a9 Gen4 AI Processor 8K runs AI 8K Upscaling and AI Picture Pro, which sharpens faces, bodies and objects rather than the whole frame at once.
  • Loud sound and clear speech without extra boxes. 80W over 4.2 channels firing forward, with Dolby Atmos, AI Sound Pro and Clear Voice Pro for dialogue.
  • Console games stay smooth and respond quickly. A 100Hz panel, G-Sync and FreeSync compatibility, HGiG mode and Instant Game Response for VRR and ALLM.
  • Everything stays plugged in. Four HDMI inputs on the side with eARC on HDMI 2 for a sound system, three USB ports, LAN, optical out and two RF inputs for aerial and satellite.

webOS is built in, with ThinQ voice recognition, LG voice search and a Home Dashboard for connected devices. AirPlay 2 and Apple HomeKit are supported, so an iPhone can send video to the screen. Wi-Fi is 802.11ax and Bluetooth is 5.0, with an Ethernet port if you prefer a cable. Tuners cover DVB-T2, DVB-C and DVB-S2, and Time Shift pauses live TV. The PM21N remote, two AAA batteries and an IR blaster cable come with it.

In a dimly lit room the dark areas of the picture drop away into the wall behind, which is what pixel by pixel dimming gives you that a backlit screen cannot.
